In 2025, its relevance is greater than ever.  A Brief History of Labour Day (Global Context) Labour Day began in remembrance of the Haymarket Affair in Chicago (1886) —a pivotal moment in the global labor movement that fought for the 8-hour workday.  Labour Day in India: Where It All Began India first observed Labour Day in Chennai, 1923 , led by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan .
